How to Handle Forgotten Memo or Deposits to an Old Address on Binance

· About 10 min

What Is Memo/Tag and Why Is It So Important

In the crypto world, some blockchains use a shared address mechanism. This means Binance may use the same wallet address to receive deposits from multiple users. To distinguish which deposit belongs to whom, an additional identifier is needed — the Memo (some chains call it Tag, Destination Tag, or Note).

Think of the deposit address as a bank name, and the Memo as your bank account number. With an address but no Memo, the bank (Binance) knows money came in but doesn't know whose account to credit.

Tokens that commonly require a Memo include:

  • XRP: Requires a Destination Tag (numeric only)
  • XLM: Requires a Memo (numeric or alphanumeric)
  • EOS: Requires a Memo
  • ATOM: Requires a Memo
  • BNB (BEP2): Requires a Memo
  • HBAR: Requires a Memo
  • XEM: Requires a Message

Note: The same token may have different Memo requirements on different networks. For example, BNB on BEP2 requires a Memo, but on BEP20 it doesn't.

Where Do Funds Go If You Forget the Memo

First, let's be clear: forgetting the Memo doesn't mean your funds are lost. Your tokens did reach Binance's wallet address — Binance's system just can't automatically identify that the deposit belongs to you.

The funds sit in Binance's "unmatched deposit pool." As long as you can prove the deposit is yours, Binance support can manually credit the funds to your account.

After registering on Binance, you can check which tokens require a Memo on the deposit page.

Steps to Recover a Deposit with Missing Memo

Prepare Your Materials

You need the following to prove the deposit is yours: Transaction hash (TxID), sending address, receiving address (Binance deposit address), correct Memo (visible on your Binance deposit page), deposit amount, and approximate sending time.

Submit a Recovery Request

  1. Log in to Binance APP or web
  2. Go to Help Center or Support page
  3. Select "Deposit Issue" → "Deposit Not Credited"
  4. Select "Forgot Memo/Tag"
  5. Follow prompts to fill in all information and submit

Download the Binance APP for easier mobile submission.

Wait for Processing

Missing Memo recovery typically takes 3–7 business days. Binance will notify you via email or APP message when complete.

What If You Entered the Wrong Memo

If you entered an incorrect Memo (extra spaces, wrong characters, or another token's Memo), the effect is similar to a missing Memo — the system can't match it. Follow the same recovery process. If you accidentally used another user's Memo, funds may have been credited to their account — this is more complex and requires support with thorough proof.

Depositing to an Old Address

Binance typically doesn't deactivate old deposit addresses. Even when the system generates a new address, old addresses usually remain valid. However, this isn't guaranteed 100%. Best practice: always get the latest deposit address from Binance before each deposit.

If a deposit to an old address doesn't arrive, first check the transaction status on a blockchain explorer. If on-chain shows success but Binance hasn't credited it, contact support.

Which Tokens Don't Need a Memo

Most tokens using independent addresses don't need a Memo, including: BTC, ETH, USDT (all networks), BNB (BEP20), SOL, MATIC, and most ERC20 tokens. On Binance's deposit page, if there's no Memo input field, it's not needed.

Preventing Memo Issues

  • Screenshot the address and Memo together when obtaining deposit information
  • Always copy and paste — never type manually
  • Note that different platforms may call the field "Note," "Tag," or "Label"
  • Send a small test amount the first time you deposit a Memo-required token

FAQ

Is there a fee for recovering a deposit with a missing Memo?

Missing Memo recovery is usually free. Complex cases (like a wrong Memo causing funds to enter another user's account) may involve additional processing.

Is the Memo fixed for each token?

For the same token, your Memo is typically fixed. But it may change after Binance system upgrades. Always verify the latest Memo before each deposit.

Security Tips

While Memo isn't password-level information, don't share it publicly either. When obtaining the address and Memo, ensure you're on the official Binance website or APP — not a phishing site.

Register on Binance to experience the secure deposit process. Download the Binance APP — it uses a prominent red warning to flag tokens that need a Memo, effectively preventing omissions.
